Where there’s smoke . . . there’s BAT

BAT is setting out its stall with a new range of products. Traditional smoking, it seems, is going out of fashion. Such is the anticipated success of vaping and “heat-not-burn” cigarettes that BAT thinks its sales will reach £5bn a year by 2022 — a conservative estimate, according to UBS. By 2030, these products are expected to make up 50% of revenues — 25 times their share today. This next-generation gear aims to offer a similar experience to puffing on cigarettes but with less exposure to toxicants. Research suggests the heat-not-burn products contain 50%-90% less of the tar and toxins that cause cancer. About 2,000 Japanese smokers who swapped cigarettes for heat-not-burners perceived health benefits, according to a survey by UBS Evidence Lab.

Decline in youth smoking

The number of young people smoking has declined, falling 6.5% among 18-24 year olds since 2010. Overall, fewer children are trying smoking. Stevie Benton, communications manager at ASH, says there are several reasons for the drop in smoking rates in young people. “The key has been a comprehensive strategy over a number of decades – no one single policy has made the difference. Dramatically curtailing the marketing of tobacco in the UK has been a vital part of the story. Measures such as standardised plain packaging, prohibitions on advertising, promotion and sponsorship, and POS display restrictions have taken away the power of seductive and glossy brands that tobacco companies used to entice smokers. Rising tobacco prices and minimum pack sizes have made cigarettes less accessible to children. Declining adult smoking rates also make a difference.”

E-cigarettes and the burning issues around vaping

According to a new report released by Public Health England (PHE) electronic cigarettes are significantly safer than smoking and can offer a potential aid for smoking cessation. But how much do we really know about vaping and its risks? Is there consensus between scientists and the public? And should the NHS be encouraging the use of e-cigarettes to aid quitters? To explore all this, Ian Sample sits down with two of the report’s authors, Dr Lynne Dawkins of London South Bank University and Dr Leonie Brose of King’s College London.

Illegal tobacco sellers use slang to beat Facebook ban

Sellers of unlicensed tobacco on Facebook’s Marketplace app are sidestepping safeguards by misspelling brand names, using foreign languages and communicating in slang. The illegal sale of tobacco costs the British taxpayer £2.5bn a year in unpaid duties. Campaign groups say that selling cigarettes at “pocket money” prices leads to child addiction. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of ASH said: “This is another example of Facebook saying one thing while doing another — looking the other way while making money out of illegal tobacco sales.”

Cumbrian smokers failing to stub out habit

Smokers across Cumbria who signed up to NHS stop-smoking services had the lowest success rate in England over a three month period with 23% recording a successful 4-week quit, compared to a national average of 49%. Claire King, a consultant in public health at Cumbria County Council, said they are looking to do more targeted campaigns, working with everyone from hospital staff to local businesses to help get the messages and support out there.

Herefordshire: Try vaping instead of smoking

Herefordshire Council’s public health team is encouraging those who’d like to stop smoking to switch over to vaping. Martin Samuels, Herefordshire Council’s Director for Adults and Wellbeing, said: “It’s encouraging that so many people are quitting smoking, although we know there’s still more to be done. Smoking is still the country’s biggest killer with approximately 79,000 deaths a year and over 900 in Herefordshire. Research shows that people who use a combination of e-cigarettes and local stop smoking services or pharmacies are more likely to be successful.”
